- My current full-time position is as a Federal Technician in uniform with the Texas Army National Guard. Yes, the potential government shutdown has affected my work schedule. National Guard drill for this weekend has already been cancelled. For me, this was a bitter sweet call. I do have several other things to do this weekend, but was still looking forward to one of my final drills in the Army.
- I submitted my official paperwork to end my military service on July 31st. After over 11 years, I'm trading my uniform for text books, lifting shoes, and athletic attire. This has been a work in progress for some time, and I am very excited to begin Graduate School at UT-Austin this fall. I will be studying Kinesiology with a focus on Exercise and Sport Psychology. CrossFit has become more than just a passion and hobby for me. It has been life-changing, and I know that I have much to offer in the Health and Wellness industry.
- Last week I gave a Nutrition lecture to a Texas Army National Guard unit preparing to mobilize to Afghanistan. I had some additional attendees interested in the Zone/Paleo lifestyle who were very receptive to the information. AJ even came out to show his support. I love public speaking. I am extremely comfortable on stage, in front of large groups of people, and am very passionate when I believe in something 100%. After the class, several of my friends confirmed, "Liz, you found your calling."
- With my focus on the next Chapter in my life, I find the current federal funding situation somewhat ironic, yet still a confirmation in my decision. The possibility of being furloughed next week is like standing on an isolated beach watching a gigantic wave slowly approaching from the sea, gaining speed and power every second. Although I will resign this summer, I was not expecting to stop working already. I know this is going to be temporary, but I am not prepared to walk away from my job yet. I am extremely fortunate to have such a strong support system, and I know I will be alright even if this continues longer than expected.
- The energy in my office building today is full of gloom and anxiety. Many families will be negatively affected if the furlough actually happens. I know the TXMF Leadership will do everything in their power to help, but compassion doesn't pay the bills. Active Duty Soldiers are required by law to work regardless of pay. My heart and thoughts go out to all military families, especially those with deployed loved ones who may be continuing to fight next week without pay.
